This week in the book When March Went Mad: The Game That Transformed Basketball, everyone is out to persuade Magic Johnson to make a decision about where he should attend college. He has narrowed his choices down to Michigan State and Michigan. He lives in East Lansing and Michigan State is located in the same city. Coaches, friends, and local businessmen are all trying to convince Magic to stay in the city and play for the Spartans. In the text it says “Wherever Earvin went, he was besieged by friends and family begging him to go to Michigan State. Earvin had a posse before anyone knew what a posse was.” I can connect to Magic Johnson in the sense of everyone trying to persuade you or pressuring you into doing something you are not completely sure about yet. I’ve been in situations where I didn’t know who I wanted to pick on my team for a pick-up game. Friends are all in my ear pleading with me and trying to convince me as to why I should pick this guy or that one. It can be stressful and nerve-racking because you hope you’re making the right decision. If it works out you look like a genius. If it doesn’t go so well then you’re blamed for not choosing the right choice. It’s just a tough predicament to be in and I can understand what kind of emotions Magic was enduring when trying to determine the right school to play basketball for.
