Now, Amir embraces his writing talents. He reads to Hassan, who is illiterate, almost every night. This is how he begins his writing. “One day, in July 1973, I played another little trick on Hassan. I was reading to him, and suddenly strayed from the written story.” (Hosseini, pg. 30) Because Hassan doesn’t know how to read, he doesn’t even realized Amir is making the story up as he goes. I can see the smirk on Amir’s face as he tells the story. I can see the lights off with just a lamp for Amir to see what he was reading, I can see Hassan lying beside him just listening and picturing the story. In this section, Amir also realizes that he is in fact friends with Hassan. He tries to just see him as a butler, but finds it very challenging.
