The book I am currently reading is called promised the moon by Stephanie Nolen. It is about the first women in the space race in the 1950s. The author’s purpose on writing the first chapter was to prove that Jerrie was a great pilot, and she was capable to be part of the space race. In the first chapter the authors talks a lot about the abilities of Jerrie. The author mentions that “… she would fly with one engine deliberately cut out, then come in low… And make it look easy…”(Nolen 2). The author also talks about how “She had set three world records- for altitude, distance and speed…” (Nolen 2). The author wants us to know that Jerrie is capable of achieving high goals. Nolen points out that a research “… showed [women] were better able to tolerate isolation and extreme temperature than male pilots” (Nolen 4). Here the author’s purpose is clearly to tell us that even though women were scarce in the space field they were better qualified to this kind of job; thus, Jerrie was perfect to be part of it.
