THE ADULTEROUS LADY

             My name is Hester Prynne, the comely lady who has been imprisoned for committing adultery. It all happened when my husband, Chillingworth traveled for two whole years. Out of my sin, i gave birth to my baby girl, Pearl. I have broken the law as a Puritan women and as part of my punishment, i have to hang the scarlet letter A around my neck everywhere i go which symbolizes adultery. Also, i have to stand for three hours on the scaffold so that everyone will know the type of lady i am.

Standing on the scaffold was very humiliating but i know someday it will pay off. In the crowd, ears are itching to know my adulterous partner but i will not speak. My daughter must find a father in Heaven, because she ‘ll never have a father here. I have now been given the chance to go away with my shame to anywhere  of my choice and i chose Boston where people know of my sin. This is because i have an idea of fixing my sin and that is what i do now. I sew clothes for the people in my town and also help  the needy but i am naturally  the most skilled seamstress in all of Boston. My sin is causing me and my little girl  lot of shame and maltreatment from the town people. Rumor is everywhere that my daughter, Pearl should be taken away from me because i am a bad influence in her life but she is the source of my happiness and the reminder to my sin, ” Every time i see her, i think of my sins. Look- she has become a living scarlet letter.” [63]

                  I already mentioned that i am a seamstress. That is what i do for a living. I make clothes and my fancy embroidery are in demand for clothes for all ceremonies and special occasions. However, my sin prohibits me from sewing wedding dresses because no bride would like to wear a dress made by an adulterous lady like me.
