questioning #20 cigarettes………

March24

Cigarettes kills , so the doctor told us. But why is it that individuals today still smoke cigarettes?. Some smoke 3 packs a day yet they are still living a healthy life like every other human being on Earth.  The most outrageous phenomenon is the one that involves women. These days women are the leading smokers on Earth. If cigarettes kills, why do people still spend millions of dollars every year buying packs of cigarettes?. Why do advertising companies spend billions of dollars advertising the consequences that will lead to a persons death after he/she smokes cigarettes. And lastly, why is cigarettes still legal?

  1. Patricia T, O’Conner writes about the use of will and would. She tries to interpret what Emeril said. “One day, Emeril said he will make creole flapjacks for breakfast. Another day he said he would make creole for breakfast.” I wonder  why the first sentence is wrong even though it sounds good and makes sense.
  2. The author writes about the use of If in complex sentences. She states that “when the if side is in the present tense, [ people] need to  write by using will on the other side to make a balance.” For instance, if I know the rule of if, I will write as the queen of England. In addition she say “when the if side (dependent clause) in the past tense,[ the other can be written by the] use of would.” I am confused about the past tense rule of if. For example’ if I went to a English school system, I now have no problem in my English class. The dependent clause of my example is about the past, assuming that I went to school where scholars study in English. I use present in the independent clause because today I have some difficulties in English.
  3. Comma plays many roles in a sentence; it can be place in the beginning, middle, and the end of a sentence. It is important in a sentence because “it organizes words in much the same way that the yellow light keeps traffic moving in an orderly fashion.” If comma organized words, why do people not have problem to speak?
  4. Patricia talk about semicolon ; she refers it to “a flash red light that helps  people to drive through after a brief pause”, which means that it is stronger that comma and used when period  is unnecessary needed.
  5. I always have problem in the use of colon. Patricia, the author of Woe is I Jr. states : “ it is an abrupt stop that’s almost like a period. A colon makes people hit the before it introduces something else.” In addition, it has opposite role as comma; it introduces a long quotation while comma introduces a sentence in a quote. I wonder why I comma and  colon both introduce quotation.
  6. We usually use quotation marks in sentences, but we do not exactly know what they represent or what they give to our sentences. According to Patricia, she refers to them as: “ the road signs when people enter and leave a city. Just as the signs define the city limits, quotation marks show where speech begins  and ends.” If Patricia says that “quotation marks show where speech begins  and ends,” why will we not end a sentence with a quotation mark?

  1. The author of Woe is I Jr., Patricia T O’Conner write about grammarphobe, she states that “it is somebody who has phobia, or fear, about grammar.” People sometime have fear about grammar because they do not know all of the grammar’ s rules; they are afraid of making mistakes because they do not want to lose point while they are testing.
  2. `People have many opportunities to change their situation, but they do not. they are discouraged or disappointed  because others have laughed at them. If they keep doing nothing, they will “ suffer later in life. [Specially when] they have to work for a living.” Grammar is more important because once, people know it, they can better converse in front of group at work, or they can write well in e-mailing or instant messaging.
  3. People use grammar in instant to inform and get news from their friends or relative, but the lack of grammar often conflict among people. Two friends are testing each other. One of them of them says “ I heard you’re bad news. “ When words are not well placed, or organized in a sentence, they confused the reader or listener to understand the speaker or writer. This statement is literally incorrect because it means his friend is bad news.
  4. In the book, Patricia is explaining the different between pronouns (subjects and objects). To explain it better, she says, “I am about to explode. Don’t mess with me!” the subject and object pronouns are very confused for someone who speaks English as second language. I is used to introduce a verb; it always precede the verb in affirmative, negative sentences etc. Me is a part of predicate; it emphases the sentence.
  5. One of the things that the author highlights, is the words that have the spelling, but they have different meaning. “  While I was sitting on tarantula, Gloria was sitting on three tarantulas.” This type of words confuses many people. It is easy to differentiate them, but it is so hard when people are only listening to them.
  6. People usually speak by pointing and grunting. It is often natural, but sometimes it is not. They are caused by lack of vocabulary and grammar. “Pointing and grunting is ok when a mom talks to her baby.” I find pointing and grunting ridicule because once, people lack vocabulary; they point things to communicate and they grunt to look for work, or try to put word together.

“Rick was in the kitchen. His mom and dad were there too. Rick was tired. He hadn’t slept well. It was the first day of his senior year. Rick was [animated] to be a senior [student], but it was also his first day at Carter High [School] and he was [concerned] about going to a new school. Rick ate his breakfast then he [became ready to go]. His mom said, wait, Rick. Don’t forget your hearing aid. Yes, Rick. Don’t forget your hearing aid, his dad said. I am not going to wear it, Rick said. He knew his mom and dad wouldn’t [love]that, but it was his choice. His dad said, you [should] to wear it; you [realize] you hear [more appropriate] when you do. Rick said, I don’t care. I am not going to wear it”(Robins 2).

Rick must sleep at least 8 hours per day. That way he can be ready to be senior because senior year is very difficult and he need to sleep well to do well in school. I am actually agreed with him when he was worried about going to a new school because I know how it is not easy to go to new school. When his mom want him to wear his hearing aid and he did not does that I really  hated him. He should do that when his mom and dad ask him to do it because they worry about him and they know what is good for him. It is not his choice because he does not hear well; he need to care about that and about his mom and dad when they ask him to do something.  Also, Rick need to tries what his mom and dad like him to do.

In the novel “The boy in the Striped Pajamas” the young boy Bruno and his family were supposed to move due to his father job. Although it was difficult to leave their house and city, all of the family members were willing to move. If they don’t move Bruno’s father”… would miss (them) all terribly…”(5) Bruno’s mother was trying to convince him. Bruno was disappointed and shocked when he was told that they should move. He was even worried about their house asking “…who (would) take care of it while (they are)  gone…”(5) He was not happy to leave their house. When they moved to the new house they found it better than their old house. When they got in to the new house “….it seemed to be the exact opposite of their old home and (Bruno) couldn’t believe that they were really going to live there…”(11) They became happier when they found it better place to live. Bruno and his family showed their love for Bruno’s father. This also shows how they respect and accept Bruno’s father’s command.

Almira grandfather has an image for any women who are wearing short dresses as a woman who has no self respect. His believes are so ridicules. With his judgment for women I wonder how he evaluated has son’s wife for approval of their marriage. Almira must be a brave teenager to still take the risk going out with that boy. Almira values her religion a lot but as any teen she tries to amend things to her favor. The boy Almira is dating must really value her for her never tried to rush her into anything she wasn’t ready for.

A new life. A new school. A new bully. That’s what Darrell Mercer faces when he and his mother move from Philadelphia to California.”(Langan 69) Darrell Mercer use to get bullied in Philadelphia so for him it wouldn’t be new i don’t even think he will feel anything. He might not even notice difference between Philadelphia and California. he shouldn’t move because the most thing he want is to getaway from bullying. Even though his mom got a job in California. the bullying is the same for Darrell he is still going to get bullied in California. i say even though its a better life and making money but Darrell’s school life wouldn’t change.

In the book of “My Beloved World” I like the context of the book and the story make me feel like I am in there whenever I read it. The struggle and suffering that Sonia went through was tough for anyone to under go, but I like the way she over come it. “That year of my father’s death had been incredibly hard on her”(Sotomayor, 68). Her mother struggle with them, but she was able to educate her children. Even though she lost her job, I like the way she work hard to send her children to schoo.

Finn and Freya (# 18 Questioning )

March15
  1. Freya and Finn were on a boat. The sun was rising, Freya felt so pleasant when she saw the sunlight because it’s been a while she has not seen the sunrise. She touched the cold water, with her finger, she felt like the water “[was] a strong wind, but thicker and heavier. As she turned her face, stared Finn, the face of Finn went red and he coughed” Why did Finn’s face go red? Was he a normal or sick?
  2. Finn and Freya were talking on the boat. Freya questioned Finn about his family. He answered that he did not have a family like Freya and Kat. He said “ my father and mom are dead forever”. So he was orphan, and Freya said “ I don’t have mom neither, and maybe the man at the stairs ( a man who wears big boots, whose she runs away from, thinking he is a monster) is my father.” Why did Freya say the man at the stays is probably her father?”
  3. Finn and Freya navigated the night until they got tired; they stopped on the left shore of the river. Fin got off the boat, and pulled it little bit over the land. He took a big blanket, spread it out and called Freya to go lay down. She first doubted, but Finn went laid down. After few minutes, Freya followed him. She pulled the blanket over her shoulders and “curled it up right against Finn. They’d both be warmer that way.” How cold was it so Freya and Finn warmed right against each other?
  4. Freya was so surprise when she touched the head of the cat. She did not even claw at Freya; Freya questioned herself, “ Has she sent you for me? Based on the quotation, I predict that Freya is not going to play with the cat anymore because she thought her big sister, Kat who was talking with the man who wore loud boots, sent the cat to find out where Freya was hidden.
  5. While Freya was sleeping, Finn lit a fire by toasted dried leaves and danced around it. The noise woke Freya up and she stared at him and laughed. Finn kept dancing; he left his arms up and up.” It reaches the spirits in the sky…” What it the meaning of this quotation.
  6. In the morning they woke up, Finn grabbed an empty sack and went to look for food. As for Freya, she went to cut fruits. When Finn was coming back, ““Freya ran to him and hugged him and gave the fruits. Why were they so interested in living in the forest?
