Help Raise Funds for Hydroponic Farm

A main component of the STEM 10 program is a year-long capstone project where students identify a problem and work with a mentor to create a solution. This year, students Brielle, Catherine, and Sydnie have worked to implement a hydroponic farm at T.C. Williams High School. These students researched and found that there is a lack of availability of affordable, organic produce in Alexandria, Virginia. With the guidance of their mentor, Doug Seidler, chair and professor of interior design at Marymount University, the team set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for their hydroponic system; T.C. Williams High School King St. Campus will implement the system in the Fall 2016.

20160421_093736Brielle, Catherine, and Sydnie have worked hard during the school year. In April, they had the opportunity to meet Jane Goodall and share their work with the environmental activist. They can be seen here holding their signed copy of Jane Goodall’s book, In The Shadow of Man.

STEM on the Potomac – River Boat Tour

On Wednesday May 4 the STEM on the Potomac group IMG_6562and forty fifth grade students from Jefferson Houston Elementary school, took a Potomac River Boat tour to learn more about Alexandria’s local waterway. The group, led by English teacher Emmet Rosenfeld, spent the day identifying different features of the river and discussing history and environmental issues; documenting their observations at several predetermined locations. The boat tour was the culminating activity of a year-long capstone project during which several groups of STEM 10 students created and delivered river-related lessons to Jefferson Houston students. Dr. Jane Goodall Visits T.C. Williams

20160415_101241On Friday April 15, Dr. Jane Goodall visited T.C. Williams to speak to over 900 students, including the STEM 10 Academy. Prior to speaking to the student body, Dr. Goodall met with several small groups of students who are currently working on Roots and Shoots projects. Brielle Quarles and Catherine Mellette spoke with Dr. Goodall about their solution for Alexandria’s food desert problem; by creating a hydroponic system the group hopes to make healthy food available and affordable to all Alexandria City residents. Charlotte Carey discussed her group’s idea to teach elementary students the process of composting. Both of these projects will support Dr. Goodall’s vision of promoting a sustainable earth through community involvement.20160415_102138

During her school-wide talk, Dr. Goodall discussed her childhood, her work with chimpanzees and her role as an activist. Following the talk, Dr. Goodall and principal Dr. Jesse Dingle planted a tree in front of the school to commemorate her historical visit.

We are very grateful for the opportunity and know that our students were inspired!

Happy New Year!

The STEM 10 Academy wishes everyone a happy new year! We are excited for 2016 and looking forward to the many events and work we have planned for the remainder of the year. First, we want to take a look at our year so far and highlight our wonderful students!

Field Trips and Events

We20151008_104359‘ve had some great field trips this school year and more to come in 2016. STEM 10 attended The Careers in Transportation field trip at the Prince William County Fairgrounds in October. Here they learned about career options in the military, local government, and construction. Many students (and teachers) took advantage of operating the heavy machinery!

20151111_095750In November, we were lucky to take a field trip to the The Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum and view The Martian in IMAX-3D. After reading the book in class, students were able to compare the story told to the one portrayed on the big screen. Everyone had a great time! 20151203_132725

In preparation of reading Sherlock Holmes, STEM hosted the National Law Enforcement Museum and took part in their Traveling Forensic Science Lab. Students learned about the process of crime scene investigation and worked to solve a mock crime!

STEM Opportunities

Several of our students took advantage of local STEM activities including Code Day DC and JAMTECH. Code Day DC was a 24-hour coding event where students stayed up all night coding! At the end of the event, students were judged on a game they created. On November 21, STEM 10 students visited The Patent and Trademark Office for JAMTECH 12 learning how to build and code a video game with volunteers from Carney, Inc, George Mason University, and Little Arms Studio. You may recognize some faces on the JAMTECH website!

Capstone Projects

Life cycle game

Life cycle game at Jeff-Houston

Our students have been working diligently on their capstone projects; researching, setting deadlines, and meeting with their mentors.

Mr. Rosenfeld’s STEM X class has visited Jefferson Houston twice to present STEM-related lessons to the fifth grade classes.

On December 16, three of our students, Grace Pattarini, Kevin Munson, and Bryce Cook visited the fourth annual Bike Hack Night at the 1776 building in Crystal City. At this event, these students were able to network and learn about technology-related apps and products to inspire their capstone project.

Read more about these capstone projects in our Student Highlights section of the website.

We’d also like to say a special thank you to all of our mentors! Students have already met their mentors and have been given excellent guidance. Visit our mentor page for more information about the capstone projects and mentor assignments.

X-STEM Symposium Donors Choose

Last but not least, we are excited to announce that we have received funding for the X-STEM Symposium in April! We will be taking all STEM 10 students to hear from a variety of speakers in STEM fields.

Here’s to another great year in the STEM 10 Academy!
