Reflection

Our students learned a great deal from making these videos. They were able to work their teaching, presentation, math, and technology skills all at once. It was a fantastic way for some of our more shy students to find their voice. The first two projects were difficult and time consuming as students learned to use the application, but they really did jump right in and start learning. It was amazing to watch them work on the last few projects, they had really become Doceri experts!

During the first project, we figured out that if a student made a mistake in the audio, they had to start over. This led us to have students practice what they wanted to say twice on each slide before recording. We also had trouble with background noise on the recordings. We were able to get a set of headphones with microphones for each of our classrooms to deal with this problem. Our TIS, Kari, emphasized the need to model each assignment and we are so glad she did. Seeing an example of what we expected was extremely useful for the students and we had hardly any hands in the air asking “What do I do next?”

Our students were able to take ownership of their knowledge through these projects. As educators, we were able to pinpoint any misconceptions students were still struggling with and address them. By allowing the students to record their voice, we got more information that we would have if we had asked them to write. Doceri provided us with an avenue for allowing our students to showcase their knowledge and a means for us to collect data on their math understanding.
