Learning Plan:

Time Frame  1 session,  Approximately 30- 40 minutes

Instruction

  • If this session is also an introduction to iPads, place iPad under the document camera and have some discussion with students about the parts (volume button, mute/lock button, headphone jack, camera eye, home button, number in white apple on the back)
  • Connect iPad to LCD projector and show student how the apps are organized (pages, groups, group names, app icons)
  • Show students how to correctly close and put away apps
  • Handout iPads and have students locate and open the Shapes Puzzles app
  • Demonstrate how to change the settings to ‘Easy’ (this gives students outlines to follow on the empty animal shapes
  • Show students how touching the animals in each scene cause them to ‘lose’ their stripes, colors, and spots
  • Have students ‘Turn and Talk’ about strategies to figure where the scattered pieces will fit on each animal
  • Demonstrate their strategies, and point out that students will hear and see the animal name when all the parts have been returned correctly
  • Allow students at least 30 minutes to sort shapes and hear/see words
  • While students work write the animal names on the whiteboard or SMART board for review at the end of the session

Technology Resources: Student iPads, LCD projector, Document Camera

Lesson Notes: The Shapes Puzzles app requires students to place and hold the animal part in the exact spot (not slide or fling).
