Word Processing and Saving Your Work

Desired Results: Students will complete a personalized name-tag using word processing software. Students will complete the first entry in their digital portfolio saved on the school server.

Assessment Evidence: The finished product will be a 2-D representation with text and at least 3 graphic images.  Both sides of the product will be identical – appropriately formatted and proportionally sized and spaced.

Learning Plan:

Time Frame  2 to 3 sessions,  Approximately 50 minutes each

Instruction

  • Explain activity outcome and expectations
  • Open SMART Sync on teacher laptop, then project Logon steps using this file- login_screen
  • Review laptop logon steps  (Novell logon, Connect to Teacher) and have students login to laptops
  • Use SMART Sync to Lock student  laptops, open teacher template (name-tag) and project
  • Demonstrate how to type, select, and resize text in the lower right box on template
  • Unlock student laptops and Sync out student Smart Notebook file (name-tag_student)
  • Have students practice typing name, center name in box, and resize text to fill the center of the box
  • Lock Student laptops and control one student laptop image to demonstrate how to save to student folders on the school Server
  • Ensure that each student has saved their work before you proceed – this might be a good point to end the first session
  • If starting a new session, review login steps
  • Lock student laptops, use one student’s laptop image to demonstrate how to find saved files on the student server
  • Unlock all student laptops and have students open their saved file
  • Lock student laptops, open activity template (name-tag), demonstrate how to use the SMART Gallery to find images, and place on the name tag
  • Unlock student laptops and give them lots of time to practice finding and using images- remind students to save often – this might be a good point to end this session
  • If starting a new session, review login steps
  • Open the teacher copy – name-tag, then have students open their work on Student Server
  • Lock student laptops, then demonstrate how to flip objects and tex,t left/right and up/down, next show students how to drag the items to the top right box to match the bottom right box.
  • Unlock student laptops and allow time for completion – remind students to save often
  • Lock student laptops and  use one student’s laptop image to demonstrate how to print out the file
  • Unlock student laptops and have students print file in groups of 5
  • Show students how to fold on the lines to complete 2-D name tag (if you print in black/white, students can color name tags)

Technology Resources: Student Laptops, SMART Sync Software, Smart Notebook Software (or Microsoft Word), LCD projector, Teacher laptop

Lesson Notes: If you choose to use Microsoft Word to complete the activity, create a blank template for students, and adjust directions for that software. Steps for Saving to the server from Student version of Smart Notebook– File>Export from Binder>To another location>Desktop>Student Server>Student Folder. If students are unable to see folders, they may not have logged on correctly. If they see other students folders but not theirs, you can quickly create a folder for that student.
