Blood and Iron: Nationalism, Imperialism, and the Rise of the Masses

This unit covers the post-Napoleonic world of the 1800s leading to the disaster of World War I.

The unit starts with World War I, its causes, undercurrents, and effects. It moves backwards to revisit Nationalism and Imperialism, as well as German and Italian unification, and the ultimate failure of liberalism in 1848.

Blood and Iron is through the lens of nationalism, an increasingly irrational and abstract idea during the 1800s that becomes a centralizing and unifying force, but ultimately leads to destruction in war and imperialism.
