A Child called it, One Child’s courage to stay alive by Mohamed Kebe

December10

The book I have recently just finished is called A Child Called It, a compelling story of the abuse the author, Dave Pelzer, went through as a child. Dave Pelzer faced one of the worse cases of child abuse in California history.  Dave has three brothers known as Ron, Stan, Russell, And Kevin. Him and his family used to live in harmony. Dave used to recieve love from his biological mother. They used to go on vacation as a family with Dave’s father around. Until his mother became alcoholic and began facing problems with her husband. She took all of her rage on Dave. Even when Dave’s father was still living with him he was abused although none of his brothers were. He was faced to live in the basement and was treated worse then the family’s pet dog. He had to play by his mother’s games in order to survive. One of the games were that if he didn’t wash the dishes fast enough he would not eat. In one case Dave was stabbed by his mother when he did not wash the dishes quick. A deep gash had opened on the side of his stomach and with the cruelty of his mother he wasn’t even taken to the hospital. He was just given alcohol and a dirty rag. Dave faced infections and pain without any emotion coming from his mothers face. Dave also faced starvation, there times when he went for days of even a week without being fed. A good meal for him was when his brothers would have leftover cheerios in their bowl. Dave had to eat the food that weren’t even given to the dog. He had to sit in the basement as if one when they family ate, even when his father was still there who disapproved of everything but never protected him. Dave faced many hard torments. He  was beaten with a dog chain on his bare skin when his mom caught him trying to find food in the trash. In time even his own brothers began treating him as trash and never eve battered an eyelid when he faced his daily punishments. Also, Dave went to school in rags, with the same clothes every single day. He got a new pants and a shirt once a year and had no friends in school although school was the happiest place for him, away from his mother.  A mother who called him a bad child although he never committed anything wrong. A mother who considered him a slave other than a son and no longer a boy but an it. Dave, being tormented since the age of four was finally rescued by an alert school teacher at the age of twelve.
