Sandy Hook Gun Control Article Week 11
Recently, I read an article on the Huffington Post that spoke about this terrible tragedy and what is being done about it. President Barack Obama did not necessarily speak about gun control but he did say, “In the coming weeks I’ll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens, from law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educators in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this.” Therefore, I ask, what can the president do to prevent this from happening again? Will all of these gun fueled massacres influence a new ban like there was in the 90’s? What is the smartest thing to do in a time like this? Should they ban all commercial guns, or should they just focus more on educating the children of the future so this does not keep happening? In my opinion, this debate has two very strong points. Banning all guns would prevent any of this from happening again, however, does banning things really disappear them from society? This was obviously proved to be wrong in the past when alcohol was banned. On the other hand, the article touches base on the other part of the argument by stating a quote by Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, representative of gun rights’ activists, “I wish to God she had had an M-4 in her office, locked up so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out and she didn’t have to lunge heroically with nothing in her hands. But she takes him (the shooter) out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids,”. Logically, yes someone could have stopped the gun man if they themselves had a gun of their own. However, this begs the question, would it not mean that everything would stay the same? Change must be made in order for things to improve and to prevent things like this from happening again.

There is a lot to think about in this dilemma. There is a constitutional right to “bear arms” so it the president cannot ban guns. There could be a limit on the types of guns or the types of ammunition though. Perhaps if gunmen did not have access to the types of guns that shoot lots of rounds at one time then they could not kill as many people so easily and so quickly.
