IR Blog #15
In the section I am reading now Frederick Douglass is explaining his first master. I am guessing Douglass was with his master “Captain Anthony” when he was younger because he was not be able to recall his first name. When Douglass is explaining him I can tell that he is similar to Douglass’ other master Auld. The reason why he is similar to Auld is because Anthony is, [very cruel and horrible to his slaves] and “was not considered a rich slaveholder” (Douglass). He also explains how his overseer’s name was Mr. Plummer. Douglass describes Plummer and as a very cruel man that took pleasure in whipping slaves. I wanted to know what is an overseer and why did the slave owners need them?
Tiarra Andrews-Owens- Question/Evaluation
An overseer is the person who makes sure that the slaves are doing what they are supposed to. He makes sure that the rules are followed and that no slave is trying to sneak away. The slaves owner had other things to do and was not always at home. The overseer was hired by the slave owner to watch the slaves.
