War Heroes Voices from Iraq

January28

Specialist Jason Mike’s dream was to be a professional football player.  He played collage football for Jacksonville University in Florida.  His dream was to go pro.  Specialist Mike’s father had a twenty year career in the military.  Specialist Mike’s dream changed after 9/11.  He joined t he military after that.  “I’m going to hang up my football cleats and put on combat boots”(47).  After his training, he ended up in Iraq in the 617th Military Police Company of the Kentucky Army National Guard.  While on the way to a mission, Specialist Mike separated from the pack to refuel his vehicle.  While he was refueling, it convoy was attacked and sixteen out of the thirty truck were damaged and four drivers were killed.  Mike was listening to the whole thing play out on his radio.  He immediately rushed to the scene with the other members in his vehicle.  Once the arrived, they examined the damage and heard enemy gunshots.  They realized that they were still under enemy attack.  His guys started fighting back.  Eventually the situation got worse because the number of insurgents was much larger then first thought.  Specialist Mike had never witness such devastation in his military career.
