Blog 18 – Battle Heroes Voices From Afghanistan
Within four months of their arrival in the region, Master Sergeant Sarun Sar and his team had won the trust of the villagers. In return, the villagers provided him with valuable intelligence concerning the Taliban. Once or twice a week, Sar and his team had run-ins with the Taliban. “Sar attended weekly shuras, meetings held with trial elders to allow them to voice their concerns.” At first the village leaders were surprised to see someone like him, an American who was willing to help them stay safe. Eventually, Sar and his men helped establish an infrastructure for water, sewer, and electricity. On their days off, they taught English to children, played soccer with them, and handed out clothes donated from America.
