Blog Post Week 25

April15

This week, I read an article of a gunman that held 4 firefighters hostage and was ultimately killed by a SWAT team. Apparently, the police decided to try and distract the gunman with a stun blast, following the blast the gunman opened fire on the team. “The gunman, who has not been identified, demanded several utilities be restored, Ritter said. According to public records, the home is in foreclosure and has been bank-owned since mid-November”. They idea of attempting to stun a gunman seems extreme and idiotic to me. In my eyes, it is quite simple what they should have done. Simply agree with the gunman’s demands only if he let’s go of the hostages, and after every one is safe, move in and arrest him. The simple fact the gunman was stupid enough to do something like this, simply shows that he would have agreed to anything as long as his utilities were restarted. The police definitely jumped the gun, literally, when shooting this man. Even worse, the stun blast should have never been an option. Scaring the man simply made him do something he regretted, inevitably ending his life.
