Oxford Murder Analysis
Although the novel is logical in its explanation of sequences and assigned meanings, the way that the police share details of their investigation with the young math student is completely illogical. At first the reader is very confused and it is very hard to follow the evidence and specific details of the investigation. I believe this is supposed to be there for atmosphere and fascinating applications of logical sequences to crime-scene investigation. It talks about a very interesting concept named Wittgenstein’s Finite Rule Paradox. This concept focuses on patterns. It gives the example of the question, “What is the next number in the sequence 2, 4, 8, 16 … ?” There is an obvious way to continue the series, which is the one most people will think of. But there is also a perfectly logical explanation for why 31 is just as legitimate.
