Fire from the Rock Week 6
Fire from the Rock is a bok about a girl getting selected to go to a newly integrated school. Fire from the Rock reminds me of the Ruby Bridges story in some ways. Ruby Bridges was a little girl who was chosen to go to an integrated school as well. The connection I made to Ruby Bridges and Fire from the Rock is that the parents were deeply concerned and worried for their child, Sylvia’s mother thought it was “a wonderful honor and oppurtunity” but was worried that it was very dangerous. In the end, the parents of Sylvia and Ruby Bridges changed and thought that it would be a good idea because they thought their children could change the world.
Tiarra Andrews-Owens- Connection
Books about this subject are so important to read and think about. While we are not going through integration in our schools now, there is still a lot of left over things from that time in our society. I just saw a “30 for 30” show on ESPN. Do you know this series? It is a great way to look at sports through quirky stories of athletes or teams or coaches, etc. Anyway, it was about the football team from the University of Mississippi in 1962. The University was forced to accept their first Black student (James Meredith) that year and there was a lot of violence with rioting over that and people were upset all year about it. The football team went undefeated that year but people didn’t really pay attention to that because their good work was overshadowed by the University’s trouble. Good for you for taking on this topic. It’s tough sometimes to read about.
