The book I’m reading is Revolutionary Suicide by Huey P Newton. This book is an autobiography of his life. Currently in the book Huey is getting more interested in learning certain things in books, he was inspired by one of his brothers that went to college. On the other hand he is in a dilemma with another lifestyle he has been leading with his other older brother and friends. He loves being around his friends and running the streets gambling, and fighting. Although he still stays in the streets in his free time he teaches himself how to read using Republic by Plato. He does it all by himself because he’s too ashamed of his inability to read. I predict that when he finishes Republic he will keep reading. He foreshadowed himself going to college which you can’t do without reading. He also said “When I began to read a whole new world opened up to me. I became interested in books. I still could not read very well, but each book made it easier. I did not mind spending hours, because reading was enjoyment, rather than work,” This proves that he will keep reading because he enjoys the worlds that reading opens up to him.
This is also why I love to read. The books can take me places that I have never been and tell me about other people’s lives that are so different than my own. What is it about Huey’s life that you think is worth reading his autobiography?
