Week 7 blog – War Heroes Voices From Iraq

January28

Sergeant Scott Montoya describes being caught up in a firefight against Iraqi soldiers.  Rapid gunfire exploded all around him.  Sergeant Montoya and his men ducked behind a wall, dropped to the ground and started shooting back.  “RPG’s whistled overhead, and grenade blasts sent chunks of concrete into the air” (5).  Sergeant Montoya could not believe how fast everything was happening.  When an RPG exploded nearby, two mean went down.  They were struck by shrapnel and suffered injuries to their head and arms.  Five minutes into the fight and already there was casualties.

Your description is good but for visualization you could do a better job describing what pictures your own mind made when you read this passage. How did the chunks of concrete look? How big were they? How far did they go up into the air? What do shrapnel injuries to the arms look like? How big was the wall the soldiers ducked behind?
