Bulletin Board Club

During class today we research different businesses that might be able to give us grants for our project. We looked at Home Depot, Lows, and a few other chain businesses. The most successful website we went on was Lows’. It gave us the most information about how we can sign up for a grant with them. We would be using the grant to help show the community about George Washington Middle School and the students that attend it. Our group is trying to put more posters up around the school and for everyone to see in Alexandria.

A few questions that we still have and need to be answered are…

Mid-Mission Reflection Madeline

Mission Topic, Purpose, and Hypothesis

When I first came to George Washington Middle School I remember walking down hallways that had no decorations or student work hanging on them. I thought that our school needed a group to help make the walls of this school more exiting. Because of that experience I decide to join the Bulletin Board Club at George Washington Middle School 2. Our main mission is to hang bulletin boards around the school community. The purpose of this is to show others around us the work of George Washington Middle School 2 students. We hypothesize that if we are able to put more bulletin boards up around our school, then others in our community will be more aware about what students work on in our daily class.

Real World Skills I’ve Learned

A few skills that our group has learned through this process is working with each other to accomplish problems and using teamwork to communicate with each other. Also, determinations, to get important work done efficiently, and having acceptance, if we are not able to get any donators, were real world skills that I have learned through this process. I can use these skills outside the classroom to help me to work with others and also getting assignments done quickly. Communication for getting donators and being able to want something and going to get it are other real world skills I’ve learned with working with a group and trying to get donations or funds.

Challenges We/I Encountered

A challenge we encountered was not being able to find a donator willing to give us supplies. We called many big businesses and none of them were able to help fund our program or donate any supplies. Another problem we faced was teamwork. Our group was not able to be accepting of each other throughout the whole process. Loyalty was also a challenge we encountered. We sometimes didn’t do what we were told to do and that caused our group to get frustrated with others. Accomplishing all work on time was an effect of not being fully loyal to our group. It made it hard to get each step done without completing the step before it.

Solutions We Tried Out

Some solutions that we tried to overcome our challenges were using Google Docs to share our work with each other and doing extra research for our grant. Another solution we tried was calling as many businesses as we could find online and telling our group members what we would be doing before we go and do it. We did that so every step in the process was done as efficiently as possible and we would not get angry at each other for not doing our part in the group.

Next Steps

Some of the things we still need to accomplish are looking for future donators, if the Bulletin Board Club is able to continue on after this school year. We would want at least two donators to help us fund our program so we are able to hang up at least one new bulletin board per year. We also need to advertise our cause so others know about us and are able to share with friends and family. After we are able to get funding for bulletin boards, we will have to make sure that they can be maintained and new work is hung up in the future. Teachers or any other staff members would be asked if they could help us do that.

Favorite Part of the Process

My favorite part of the process was being able to call people in the community to see if they could donate to our program. This was my favorite part because we had to create scripts, to make sure that we told them all of the information they needed to know and that we sounded former and more like a developed business. It also helped our group with our social skills. It made us think more about what we were saying and what was appropriate to say if we wanted to sound formal. Another favorite part of mine during this process was writing emails to higher educated people to learn more information about our topic and what we needed to do. We needed to contact our principle, carpenters, Alexandria City Public School Regulation’s office, and a few other companies that might want to help spread the word about our project.
