THE TIME I GOT STUCK ON A FENCE

One day I woke up on a fresh Saturday morning and watched the sun rise until I heard knocking. I went down stairs and opened the door when I opened it I saw my cousin Anthony. I asked him what he was doing here in a mumbling voice, and he said “I am staying for the weekend.”  [I froze for a second.]  I just woke up so I was sleepy when I was talking to him I was so sleepy I didn’t hear him say he was hungry so for the whole day he was starving. When I was fully awake I asked him what he wanted to do he said he wanted to play soccer. I told him if he wanted to come next door to my friends house to get a ball because all my soccer balls our flat or popped and he said “sure.”

When my friend opened the door I asked if we could play with his ball and he said “sure hold up”. He gave me the ball and, Anthony and I went to my back yard to play.We were playing a cool soccer game and he kicked the ball so hard my hands turned red. I punched the ball over the fence. We were both shocked that I blocked it.I knew the only place the ball could of went was the neighbors yard and when I saw it there I was shocked cause I never knew they bought a new  fence. I jumped off my ladder and got caught in the fence and I was in pain because the sharp fence skinned my thigh my cousin Anthony was just staring at me and, when I asked for help he and all he did was rip my shorts off.

when I got out of the fence I got the ball returned it and went home.I remembered that Anthony was hungry so I told my mom if we could have pizza and before she said “yes can u go hand me the number for pizza hut”. I quickly went to go grab it.Before she called she told me to go change. When I was finished I saw Anthony eating so fast he had gotten a pepperoni stuck on his dirty face. When I was done eating I felt the side of my thigh and I felt blood I was so scared like a little boy lost in the woods.I run to go to my mom and ask for help and she puts alcohol and when she was finished she told me and Anthony to get some rest .But we couldn’t because our legs and hands were burning red when we finished playing soccer and nearly killing our self by getting stuck on the point fence.   THE END

The Visit

It was a warm Friday we had school and I was tired. I felt  like my legs were about to fall off.

I was hoping that someone can come to the my  house. And I heard a knock at the door I opened squeak kkkkkkkkkkkk! and it was Kristopher.

“ I thought you were coming tomorrow”

No my mom said today”

“Wait did you tell her that you were sleeping over “

I said “yeah”so I gave him a soda it was really cold that I almost dropped it”

“wow this so good what is it” “SPRITE”OH it tastes so good that even a dog will taste it” ha ha ha”

 I laughed

So we picked a game that he wanted and it was fifa.

“I will beat you” kris said “lets see “ I said

So then I turned on my console. “we should play bo2 first ”

I said “all right” Kris said so we start to play and  then we got bored  and  watch my favorite ghosts aventures. Then i fell asleep but kris was still awake. Then the next day he was awake  and i was still was sleeping so then he waked me up.

“dude wake up wake up”  so then I waked up My mom and my brother was still asleep so we tip toed to the kitchen.”

“I hope we don’t my mom and brother up because i will get in trouble for waking up my mom”

So then we just wait in the kitchen until my mom wake up. It was about 10:30 and my mom woke up. So then i told kris to turn on the console. So we played for about 2 hours then we asked my mom to go to the soccer field. I called my friends so we can play soccer. When they came we played 2v2 it was Kris and me vs Eduardo and Kevin we won by 2 goals after that it was getting late. And Kris had to leave.

“se yaha tomorrow ” I said

“ Ok” Kris said   Then Kris  left and I left.

A Diamond in the Rough

The tube train screeched to a halt.

“Now approaching Kings Cross station”, the automated voice said, “Please mind the gap”.

“This is our stop”, my mom said, addressing my brother and I.

I stood up, the effects of jet lag heavy.  I followed my mom to the sliding doors of the train, my brother behind me. I trained my eyes on my mom’s striped, knit hat, trying not getting lost in the zombie-like crowd of people shuffling towards the door. I finally reached the edge of the platform, right outside of the train. Checking my brother was behind me, I adjusted the straps of my backpack. I looked around at the congestion of people coming out of the train, they were all, and by all I mean everyone was Timberland boots, wool jackets, a scarf. I really felt like an outsider, I mean, I was wearing a hoodie and a Yankee hat; how American.

The King’s Cross Tube station was overflowing with a stream of people headed to the turn-stiles. Following the multiple signs and arrows, my brother, mom and I eventually reached the booth where you buy Oyster Cards (UK Metrocard).

As we approached the front of the line, the teller smiled at us.

“American?” she asked.

“We come from Virginia”, my mom replied.

I guess the teller could tell we were foreigners because of our aura of cluelessness. We were like a diamond in the rough, except in a bad way. My mom then deposited some money onto our Oyster Card, enough for us to get around London primarily by Tube.

Once again we started following the arrows to the turn -stiles. As I walked, I looked along the curved ceramic tiled walls. Posted on the walls were advertisements and flyers for plays and theatrical performances. I grinned, in the Metro Stations in the U.S. all you saw were advertisements for electronics and cars. After surveying the walls for long, the girl from Les Miserables was permanently seared into my brain. I really hoped that we wouldn’t get lost.

I looked away and found my mom staring at a map of the layout of Tube, by the expression on her face; I could tell that we were lost. I felt helpless, there were arrows hanging from the ceiling to direct people to the exit, how could we get lost? After observing the map a little bit longer, I could tell that we had been looking at the wrong signs.

Once we followed the correct signs we finally stumbled upon the Tube station exit. My mom had the Oyster card in hand, and I looked at the turn-stiles. There was a sensor where the card was supposed to be placed. There was one problem, between the three of us; there was only one Oyster Card. This meant that once one person had opened the turn-stiles, the other two of us had two quickly go through the stiles before they closed.

After the first attempt at this ( which was an absolute fail, my backpack had got in the stiles while they were closing), an exasperated police officer, with her checkered uniform and neon yellow safety vest approached us and offered us help. In turns out that the handicap gate could be used for families. Using that made life a million times easier. This little mishap screamed out to everybody in the tube that we were tourists, hopefully that wouldn’t happen again.

We exited the Tube Station, as I clambered up the stairs; my face was greeted with a blast of cold air. The cold numbed my nose, and pinched my ears. I reached the top of the stairs, and the sound of cars rushing by filled my ears. I looked around, and I was immediately reminded of how different things were. The taxis were solid black, with ads posted on the doors. They looked exactly like the ones in the movies. Instead of the Toyotas, Hondas, and other cars you find in the States, there were Jaguars and even some Lamborghini and Ferraris. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

As we walked to the hotel, I could hear the rustle of the leaves in the wind above me. I could tell this was going to be an exciting trip in London.

The Game

“Ground balls” my coach said as we put the ball on the ground and picked it up. We looked over at the other team as they also warmed up for the game about twenty feet away from us. The other team gave us looks and talked to each other about us when they looked over to us. My team the Madlax National team were at the Young Guns lacrosse tournament in Baltimore, Maryland. The best teams in the country were at this tournament and we were in the semi-final game of the whole tournament. We had played 6 games before and won 5 of them. The team we had lost to was the team we were playing in the semi-finals, they had beat us before by one goal. We had beat the number one seed, The West Coast All-Stars from California. Now we were playing the number three seed Sweet Lax from Rochester. They were dressed in green, blue, and white and they all had the same helmets. We exchanged stares with them before the game started. We gave nasty looks at each other, we both really wanted to win the game.

A whistle blew “Take the field white” the ref said. We started walking on the field as we got pumped up for the big game. In our team huddle it felt like we were ready to go to battle, we all were ready for them game and extremely pumped up.

‘“This is a big game boys we need to work hard and get the ground balls if we want to win this game.” We took the field and I lined up at the face off line. So many things were going through my mind at the face off line, was i going to win, how can i beat him and many more thoughts. I got in my stance, I was staring dead straight at the ball on the face off line. The ref started to walk over to me and my opponent.

“Ok no cheating, a clean face off.” the ref said as we got ready for the face off. “Down… set… whistle.  It was a scrum for the face off but I got the ball out and passed it to my teammate. We took the ball down to their side of the field and we got into our offense. We worked the ball around a couple of times and moved it to my teammate Connor. He drew his defender to him then split to the right and beat him. The other defender slid to him running at him, when the defender was right in front of him he dished it off to my teammate Ross from florida, he had an open shot and shot low to high and it went in the top right corner of the goal. We all started jumped up and cheering on the sideline. I was so happy when we got the first goal of the game, it was very important that we had the lead. It was now 1-0. After that they got the ball and beat our defense and took a shot from up top and scored. It was a battle the rest of the quarter and there was so many scoring chances but no one put the ball in the net the, so the score remained 1-1.

The second quarter began with another face off. I was really nervous to take this face off, it was very important. I lined up again for the face off. The ref blew the whistle to start the face off. I started wrestling with my opponent to get the ball. I had got the ball and when i tried to pull the ball out it and the ball got out of my stick and the other team got the ball.  They ran the ball down passed it twice and took a shot. I was really scared the shot was really fast and it was going to the bottom right corner but my goalie got his stick there before the ball could get there and he saved it. I was very happy to see him save it because it was a very difficult shot to save. My goalie found my teammate up the field and passed it to him. Now we were on a fast break, my teammate ran it down the field and passed it to the attackman, he passed it to the other attackman and he  passed it once more shot–goal! We were now up 2-1. The sidelines went crazy after the goal. After that the other team answered with another goal, it was tied 2-2. There was 10 seconds left in the half. The face off began and I won it cleanly, the time was ticking as i took it down the field. I passed it to my attackman and he shot as the defender ran to him with 1 second left in the half, it went right through the goalie’s legs into the net, we all went crazy on the field and on the sideline. We went into the second half with a one goal lead. I felt really good about myself after that because i made a good play to help my team get the lead.

The second half began with another face off. I won it and settled the ball. We got into our offense and moved to ball around. We dodged from up top, while my teammate was dodging the defender went over his head with his stick trying to get the ball from him but he smacked my teammate in the head with his stick. The flag was thrown high up and the air and the whistle followed after. We were man up for one minute. The whistle blew and what we started our man up played. As we moved the ball we beat the defense we had an open shot from up top. The shot bounced in front of the goalie, then went top right corner. We all jumped on the sidelines. The third quarter ended with the score 3-2 us.

The last quarter began with another face off won by us, we took the ball down and worked it around. We started to burn some clock. 5 minutes went by and there was no more scoring, the score remained 2-3. As we were working the ball around my teammate passed the ball but it got picked off by their defense. They got the ball on our side of the field. They started moving the ball around and dodged. With 2 minutes left they had an open man on the crease and passes it to him, he faked low and shot high. The shot went in the top right corner. It felt like a stab to the heart with 1:45 left in the game. The game was now tied, and we knew we had to score fast. They won the face off and ran it down the field. The face off guy passed it to the attack-man, but in mid-air my defense-man picked off the pass and ran it up the field. As he was running up the field he passed it to the middie who sprinted as fast as he could down the field. He passed it to the attack-man, Ross he through a fake and beat the defender, then he stepped back and took a shot. We all stared at the ball traveling to the goal. It hit the bottom right corner, we all jumped up on the sideline. We knew the game was not over yet though we needed to get the ball and burn the rest of the clock so they do not score. There was 30 seconds left in the game. I felt so relieved. I went on the field to take the next face off. I was focused to win this face off because it was the most important face off of the game. I went to the face off line, shortly my opponent came to the line. The ref came over and i was already ready to take the face off. He blew the whistle to start the face off. I did a quick move and I got the ball in the back of my stick. I ran with it to open space and popped the ball out and passed it to my teammate. They started to double the ball and took the goalie out of the goal. We took the ball behind with about 20 seconds left. Everyone was was standing up, excited to see the outcome. My teammate beat the double with no goalie in the goal, shot and scored! We were now up 4-2 with 5 seconds left we ensured the win. When the final whistle blew we ran with joy and excitement to our goalie. We all jumped on him congratulating him. It was a great game and a great outcome. We had now won the semi-final game to make it to the championship of one of the biggest tournaments in the country. It was one of the best feeling in my life and it took a lot of hard work and effort but it was really worth it.

Plane Trip To Utah

10:00 A.M. in the morning getting on the plane smelling the fresh aroma of refreshments and peanuts.  My mentor uncle Marvin (Mr.Marvin) sets up the Ipad and the beats by Dr. Dre so I can watch a movie.  We talked about the NBA, other sports,(etc)’’boy stuff’’.  There was this one time when I couldn’t hear Uncle Marvin for a sec so I started chewing my gum.  It was so hard my own gums started to hurt, all I had to do is hold my nose and try to blow threw my nose so it will go away .  When we were almost there i looked down at the window and asked “Why does it look so flat” He said ‘‘This is the country side of Utah with  a lot of flatland’s’’.  We are going to the big mountains so you can see it right out of the windshield of your car’’.  When we were almost there I saw A lot of big mountains under us I took lots of pictures.  When we got of the plane we waited for Iggy (Daniel and Elijah’s step dad) because we had to get something to eat I mean we’ve been on a plane for four hours.  We went to five guys and I got bacon cheeseburger with : Ketchup, Mustard, Sweet Relish, and Fries.  I also got some of their famous peanuts.  There was this one guy who asked us would you like fry sauce on your burger.   I asked what is fry sauce Iggy replies with “ Its a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise”.  I looked nasty so i didn’t try it out.  We left and went to there house.  They had a big house with four bedrooms and a garage.  It didn’t look big from the outside but oh it was big in the inside Mrs.Darlin told me and Uncle Marvin and I that Iggy is go to pick up Daniel and Elijah from school and said to Uncle Marvin hide on the couch upstairs and I  hide downstairs,They didn’t know we came to Utah so it was a surprise .  When they saw us they were so surprised .   We did so much stuff , We went laser tagging ,  played basketball.  My favorite was tubing.  It was a lot of fun,  We used those round things you use at the pool we went down these crazy hills and while we were spinning and turning while everyone  laughing.  We took a lot of pictures i had a great time in Utah and hope i can go again.

Realization

Have you thought of being an only child in your family?  I felt like an only child when I was small.  I overheard my parents talking about bringing someone from Honduras when they thought that I was asleep.”OK they’re going to come this month or so” said my mother quietly so that she would wake me or my little sister up but what she didn’t know was that I was wide awake. In my head I was wondering who it was because I didn’t have that much family in the U.S so, knowing that someone was coming was exciting for me.  Being the little kid I was, I didn’t know who they were going to bring so I busted into their room like a wild animal to see if I could ask them who they were talking about, unfortunately they were furious with me and said “go to sleep!”  but still in a silent voice because if they didn’t they would’ve woken up little sister if they didn’t since she was about five feet away from their bed,  They said that they were going to tell me another day. By the time they told me it was summer and they said that they were already on their way but I didn’t believe them.  We prepared a surprise party in what I thought was a small apartment, which I didn’t understand why we were doing that.

My uncle was at home taking care of my sister and I, while my mom was “supposedly” doing an errand. I remember that my uncle had a bit of a grin on his face when he came over to our home. When my parents got home I thought they were home from an errand but I was wrong, they brought people behind them. My mom presented my sisters to me but I argued that they weren’t my sisters “they look nothing like me” I said in somewhat loud voice “Yes they do Christopher!” my mother yelled at me and I saw that she was getting irritated with me by the tone of her voice and how her face was getting red and I replied with a smug  look on my face“whatever”.  Looking at it now it was so disrespectful and I should’ve just stayed quiet and gone to my room without saying a single word.  I was in denial that whole day while my sisters,my aunt, and my uncle were having a blast.

I was getting used to sharing because my little sister was born two years before this happened.  Sharing things with a two year old wasn’t that much of a change since they can’t really speak and make a lot of their own decisions.  I was going through many emotions, at one point I felt loneliness and sadness, like I was alone in  darkness and no one cared for me.  I felt like this because my mother didn’t really pay attention to me and would always go on errands with my twin sisters, for that reason I felt hatred and I sometimes felt like punching things.  Back then I didn’t understand that the world didn’t revolve around me,  and my mom was just catching up with my sisters and buying them clothes for school.  I didn’t like being home all day with nothing to do except watch tv and hoping my parents would come home at that moment.  Inside of me I felt a little bit of hatred towards my sisters for taking away my mother as if they were my enemies,  like if it was a war between me and her. To implement hatred towards them I would usually back talk to them in a rude tone or mock them. Yeni or Sara would say”You wanna go to the store” and I would most likely say “You wanna go to the store” or “I don’t like you guys” in a small voice with a smug look usually looking down at the ground.

If  My mother asked me if I would like to go to the store or a place my most of my  responses would be “absolutely” because I felt like.  Once they were here for about two weeks, things died down and I felt a part of the family again because my parents wouldn’t be constantly on errands.  That was at the point where I realized that they weren’t out to seize all the spotlight.I learned that they were my sisters, and I shouldn’t think of the many ways to get rid of my sisters.  I had an epiphany that my mother loved all of the same.  The one event that made me realize this was when I was playing outside with a pair of new roller skates that my mother bought me and that she bought one of my sisters “Sara”.  I tripped and slid a couple of feet scraping most of my knee.  At the time I was really scared of blood and needles so seeing all this blood coming out of my knee was traumatizing. I was in shock and didn’t know what to do, so Sara got a some cloth to cover my scrape and I tell by the expression on her face that she didn’t know what to do. My mom came down to the sidewalk with supplies to help cleanse the wound. ‘What happened’ she said but I was to nervous and scared to tell her what happened .She held me tight with her warm and soft arms and then it struck, my mom didn’t just care about my sisters, she cared for all of her children and my sisters also cared about me.

After that month of my sisters being at our house I wasn’t really jealous of my sisters.  They were really nice to me and I didn’t have any really big fights after that we had small fights like who got to take a shower first and minor things. These fights would usually go like this, “Mom, Christopher doesn’t let me get the tv remote!” they would scream very loudly and get mad at me with a very angry and red face, but we never got into any fights were we wouldn’t speak to each other.  Although I disliked that I wasn’t the oldest and I didn’t get the privileges I used to have it was, also good for me in a positive way because I didn’t have to  do a lot of the chores anymore.  They were also a role model to me because they were the oldest now and they now had set an example for me.

Baseball Mess-up

12:37 in the afternoon and I felt like hitting some baseballs. I asked “mom can we go to the batting cage”,of course she said “yes”.  My mom and I went to the batting cage. While I was hitting, some balls went high in the sky. I selected fast for my speed. I was doing a excellent job, until I missed and the ball hit me on my leg. I went home to put some ice on it. I rolled up my long baseball pants and I saw humongous bruise on my leg

I was putting ice on my leg, which my mom told me “you need to prop up your leg or else it’ll get worse”. Then my dad walked in. He saw the giant bruise on my leg. He asked “what did you do”, I then told him” a baseball hit me at the batting cage.  I also told him “it really hurts”. He took me to the the doctor the next morning. I have been going to this doctor for a very long time.

The doctors assistant walked into the patient’s lobby. She called “Matthew ”. I went into the doctors office, where he checks you for your problems. I told him” I bruised my leg at the batting cage”. He told me”you need to take x-rays”. I got back my x-ray results. I found out that I had fractured my tibia bone in three different places.

I couldn’t go to school for two weeks and when I did I had to use crutches. I thought that the crutches were terrible because they hurt underneath my arm. I had to put ice underneath my arm because of the crutches. I only had three weeks until I could take the cast off and walk on it. Then I could finally walk without these crutches, I was thinking to myself.

It was three weeks later, so I went to my doctor that morning. I went into his office. I took x-rays again and I was ninety-nine percent healed. I could walk perfectly on my feet again. I was so happy. My mom was happy too. She was so happy, she took me to get a milk-shake at my favorite ice-cream place. I went home to tell my dad. He was happy that I was healed too. He said “Thank goodness”. I went back to school the next morning, and I saw all my friends. I was so happy to see them, and I think they were happy to see me too.

Trust Issues

I recounted my money, cursing the prices of the theater.  Why was everything so expensive?  It was ridiculous, who ever heard of twelve dollars for a ticket?  I glanced out the glass doors.  What if they didn’t show up?  What if they got here too late, and the movie sold out?  I had gone through too much to get here to be tripped up by such silly things.

It was dim in the Regal Cinemas lobby.  The only light was the pre-summer sun filtering through the polished glass doors.  I rocked back in forth on my feet, growing more agitated as the minutes ticked away.

I finally saw TJ pull up in front of the doors, and I looked away, trying to hide the fact that I was worried that he wouldn’t show up.  He smiled at Selena and I, and I smiled back.  We stood around in an awkward silence, unsure of what to say to each other.

“Where’s Soren?” I finally asked, breaking the silence.  “He should be here by now.”  Selena and T.J. shrugged.

“Well speak of the devil and he will appear.” Soren pushed his way through the heavy glass doors.

“Hey, guys!” he said, with a calm smile on his face.

“He-ey,” Selena and I chorused simultaneously.  We went through the barrier and headed to the room in which they were screening Man of Steel.

As we walked into the dark room, I thought about how hard I worked to get here.  I scanned the crowd of people already in the theater.  I smiled as I realized that they hadn’t gone through with their threat.

“So…Summer’s almost here…” Selena said lazily, slumped over her lunch in the cafeteria.

“I can’t wait for school to finish,” I said.  “But I’m gonna miss all you guys.”  A grim smile was shared by the people at our table.

It was June.  We had three weeks left of school, and I couldn’t wait to be free of this prison.  I looked forward to spend hours lazing on the beach.

We sat mostly in silence, except for a small bit of idle chatter about nothing of real importance.  I didn’t want the year to go out like this.  I wanted to remember my friends throughout the Summer.

“Why don’t we go see a movie?” I asked.  It was merely a suggestion, but already the cogs in my brain began to turn and formulate a plan.  Soren shrugged.

    “Why not?” he said.

We spent the next few days planning.  We weren’t quite sure what movie we were to see, but so far, the Internship seemed like the leading option.  TJ, Soren, and Selena had already gotten permission from their parents.  All that was left was for me to get my parents’ consent.  I had hesitated, putting it off day by day.  I was worried that my parents would say no.

They will never say no if you don’t ask.  My elder brother, Syd, had told me that once many years ago, though I doubted that it would save me from my parents’ wrath if I failed to notify them about the upcoming event.  I feared if they said no, everything would become final.  I would sit at home on a very sad Friday afternoon while my friends enjoyed themselves.

I sighed heavily, trying to calm myself before I proposed the idea to my parents.  I had made an attempt to be well behaved over the past few days, so it wouldn’t appear as if I was only being well behaved to meet my own ends.  This was a common concern in my household, as I was neither the most honest or hard working person.

My parents sat on our couch, discussing their jobs and how their day was.  I leaned on the back of one of the high backed chairs, facing my parents.  They didn’t acknowledge me at first, as me and my brothers often congregated around our parents without saying or doing anything before getting up and leaving after a few minutes.

I should let you know, my parents can detect my ambition and greed from over a mile away.  Maybe its how my eyes harden, and a too-good-to-be-real look comes across my face.  My father looked up at me.

“Yes, Carrie?” he asked.

“Nothing,” I said, deciding it would be best to wait just a few more minutes.  My parents knew that I wanted something, as I did not hop up and leave after they questioned my presence, but they shrugged it off.  I stood there, fidgeting like a bug, waiting for a break in the conversation.

“Um, mom, dad?” I began.  They looked up at me.

“Yes?” My mom asked.

“Well, Summer’s almost here, and I was wondering…” I took a deep breath.  “I was wondering if I could go to the movies with my friends.”  My parents thought for a moment.  I knew that they were considering every option.  I also knew that they’d be fair, and that they wouldn’t make excuses as to why I couldn’t go.  To tell the truth, that’s the outcome that scared me the most.  Because they would say no only if there was an unshiftable event in the near future.

“Who’re you planning on going with?” my mom asked.

“Uh, you know, Selena, TJ, those guys,” I said, shifting in my seat.

“We’ll have to think about it,” my dad said.  I nodded.  Not wanting to dwell, I got up and went upstairs, speculating the outcome.

“So, mom, can I go?” I asked the next morning.

“Maybe.  Your dad has a meeting that day and I don’t know if he’d be able to drive you.   And who all is going again?”

“Selena, TJ, and Soren,” I said.  My mom frowned.

“It sounds a lot like a double date to me.”  I face palmed.  Sometimes it was as if my mom forgot that I was merely twelve, and had no interest in dating at the time.

“Um, no, mom.  Its not a double date.  Its just Soren and TJ.”  My mind raced on how I could persuade my mother otherwise.

“I’ll have to discuss it with your father.  He has a meeting that day and we don’t know if he’d be able to get you to the movies,” my mother said simply, and I left the topic alone.

I tried desperately to be good over the next few days.  I made wild half-successful attempts to be kind to my younger brother.  I cleaned every mess I came across.  I sat up straight and used manners to the best of my ability.  I thought I was doing pretty good, but I had missed one small black mark that could ruin everything.

“We found out about you Facebook, Carrie.” That was all my dad had to say.  I practically fell over.  I had completely forgotten about that.  I had gotten a Facebook in the beginning of the year, and I had kept it a secret from my parents.  I knew that they would say no to it, so I got it without asking.  But, I had quickly discovered that Facebook would be too bothersome to continue on and had quickly abandoned it.  I hadn’t been on it since before Christmas.

“What?” I tried to play clueless.  I hadn’t included my full name, just Carrie G.  I had avoided putting up pictures of me on my page.  How had my dad found out?

“Carrie, we thought we could trust you…” my dad said.  “I typed in your name in the search bar, and your Facebook page was the very first thing that came up.”  I wanted to run away.  I wanted to deny everything.  It was like being caught with your hand in the cookie jar.  How was I going to get out of this one?

“I haven’t used it in forever!” I exclaimed.  “I got it, but decided it would be too hard to keep up with, so I stopped using it!”

“Carrie, we got you that kindle so you could read.  Not use the internet.”  Lovely.  Just to add to it, they thought I was using my kindle.  I had actually used the school computers, but I didn’t want to push it with my dad.

“I’m sorry,” I said quietly, kissing my trip to the movies good-bye.

“Carrie, we need to know that we can trust you.” I glanced up at my dad, and was shocked to see that he didn’t seem angry or anything.  Just a little upset.  I apologized again, and restated that it had remained untouched for months.

“Carrie,” my parents called me into the living room.  I walked in, knowing exactly what they would say.  I appeared to be void of emotion, allowing them to tell me themselves instead of hinting that I had heard their conversation through the floorboards upstairs.

“We’ve talked it over and decided to let you go,” my dad said.  I allowed a smile.

“Thank you so much!” I said.

“BUT,” my mother began.  “You have to sit next to Selena.  None of this boy-girl-boy-girl thing.”

“We might just send Syd with you,” my father said, only half joking.  Syd, who was walking by, stuck his head in.

“Just what exactly am I being signed on to?” he asked.

“Nothing, Syd,” my parents chorused.  He gave us a suspicious look, and continued his march to the kitchen.

I smiled that my parents hadn’t followed through with one of their previous threats of setting Syd up in the seats.  We went up towards the top seats.  Soren sat to my right and Selena to my left.  I ended up giving my popcorn to Soren, as I was full.

My eyes stung from the light as we exited the theater once the movie had ended.  We all hugged and order one another to keep in touch (something all of us were not good at).  As Selena and I got in her car and left, I looked back at my other two friends, waving good-bye to us.  And I realized, I would miss them more than I thought.

But not as much as I would miss being trusted when my parents found out that we saw Man of Steel instead of the Internship.

18 Miles In Three Days

After a restless night filled with tossing and turning it was finely morning. The sun was starting to peak out of its nighttime placement. As I pulled the sleeping bag off of my overheating body, the cold swept in and I was instantly reminded where I was, the mountains.

“Rise and shine, sleepy heads,” my Mom  announced, “it’s time to get hiking .”

She was answered with echos of mumbles.

My family and I were going too finally, after three years and one attempted try. We were going to fulfill my grandfather’s death wishes to drop his ashes on Mount. Haystack, his favorite place in the world.

After getting up we had to eat and put on our bulky hiking boots on. Later I had to put on the dreaded pack. The day before, it weighed about 20 pounds .It felt like one hundred pounds after carrying it on my back for five miles.

I stepped out of the large, warm and cozy cabin. The cold morning breeze sent goose bumps down my neck. It may have been summer but it sure felt like winter.

“Come on guys let’s get going now,” I yelled into the cabin, “Let’s go.”

“Ok we are ready now” said my mom

Everyone marched out to begin the ten mile hike.

After hiking and hiking and hiking and yes more hiking, the trees were getting smaller and not as lush as before. The beautiful thing that meant we were getting to the peak of the mountain.

The big boulders in front of us seemed so perfectly placed on the trail compared to the map that we were studying in front of us.  Could this be the mountain, how could it be this easy?

“Yes we made it to haystack, yay!” We all chanted in together.

As victory filed our minds another Hiker pasted us.

“Did you know that this is not even little Haystack? Little Haystack is that big hill in the distance,” the Hiker told us.

We all looked at each other in astonishment. We had no idea that it would take so long it was already one o’clock and we had not even eaten lunch yet. Feeling disbelief we headed on to Little Haystack. Which surprisingly looked a lot closer than it really was?

Now we were far past the tree line and everything was getting even steeper than before. Our group was 75% of an elderly age. It was hard for them to keep up with me and my sister. At one point it was as if walking up a wall and that was a challenge for everyone.

Next we were nearing a muddy pit.

“Come on Guys follow my lead” said Uncle Dana

He put his walking stick against a boulder so that he did not get his boots covered in of the mud pit. It was a clever move, but unfortunately Maeve did not copy what he did and stepped right into the mud and got her shoes all dirty.

“Eww, Maeve you’re all muddy, are you okay?” I asked Maeve

“Oh, I’m okay. My shoes are just dirty.” replied Maeve

As we reached the last part of getting to Little Haystack, it was as if it was getting steeper, and steeper, and steeper in an unsafe way. As I clenched the rocks when I looked to the right off the edge I could see the distant valleys far below. Knowing time was short we couldn’t stop and look at the breath taking views we had to venture on.

The rocks where tinted green because of the lichen it was spectacular in a kind of way that you can only get from nature. As we neared Little Haystack we all started to worry. Worry about what time it would be when we got home? What we would run into if we got back after dark knowing that it was bear country out here?

“Okay, I’m hungry we’ve made it to Little Haystack I think its time to eat now.” announced my Father.

“Yeah let’s eat,” My Mother said “It’s already 1 o’clock.”

So we all sat down on Little Haystack, on the hard rock overlooking the wonderful Mountain View and I bite into my apple. Instantaneously, a swarm of gnats buzzed all around in our faces as we devoured our food.

After eating we decided to keep on going.

“Come on,” said Dory, “Burr, this is cold up here.”

We started hiking up again, but now our bellies were full.

“Hey guys, it’s almost one thirty we can send a couple people up to Haystack to throw Chuck’s ashes into the wind and then the other group of people can start going back down the mountain its getting rather late.” Said Uncle Dana

“I think everyone will want to go to the top together,” Said my father “It’s important for everyone to experience it together.”

We all continued up the mountain finally we sighted the tippy top of the mountain every step took us closer and closer to that perfect spot where we would put grandpa’s ashes. That spot was one of the few places with alpine grasses. Once we got there we pulled out the ashes that we had and each and every one of us: Dad, Mom, Uncle Dana, Dory, my sister Maeve, and I. We all took a pinch of ashes said a couple of words and spread it out evenly so it lightly covered the rocks and grasses.

After 7 hours of hiking we had finally completed our mission, all that was left was getting back before dark. It was already 2 o’clock and we could sense the evening creeping towards us.

“Guys lets split up I will take the youngsters so we can get out of here before dark we will go as fast as we can, I think this would be best so you all don’t slow us down and make us wait for you to catch up at every turn.” Suggested Uncle Dana

“Ya, that sounds like a good idea.” Reapplied my dad

We waved good bye and we were off. Our pace quickened and before we knew it been multiple hours since we had seen the rest of our party. We recognized tree stumps and mushrooms were we had about seven hours ago past by them. Everything seemed like fairies could have lived there it was so enchanting. The last mile felt like the longest in the whole 18 mile trip every time we turned a corner it brought our hopes up and we would jump up with joy because we thought we were done.

When we finally got to the end we were so over the whole hiking thing all we wanted to do was put our feet up for a moment. The other half of our whole group had stayed back they stayed back for a number of reasons. Some of the reasons were because my sister Clare, had sprained her ankle, my Aunt, was sick with a cold, and my cousin Jeani flew all the way from Australia and still was jet lagged . All of them came and met us with a big hug and more trail mix.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so happy you guys made it here in time!” explained aunt Alice, “wait, where is everyone else?”

“We were going too fast for them so we split up we don’t know when they are getting here but hopefully soon.” Answered Uncle Dana

“It’s getting late what we should do?” questioned Jeani

“I think if in the next thirty minutes they don’t come back we should get a search party out looking for them, said Aunt Alice, “for all we know they could have been attacked by a bear.”

For the next thirty minutes we waited and waited but they didn’t come.

I started to really worry they not prepared if anything bad were to happen. They didn’t have a pocket knife or extra food. What if they were attacked a bear! What if we never found them!

“We should go meet them with a search party we don’t know what could have happened to them.” Said Jeani

“Right they don’t have flash lights,” Uncle Dana reminded us

“Do we have enough lights?”asked aunt Alice

“Did you all say that you all still had hikers hiking?” interrupted another hiker

“Yes,”answered aunt Alice

“Well I here there is a mother and cubs out there, it would be unsafe to be out there at night,” stated the hiker, “I could help y’all find them.”

“That would be great!” Aunt Alice said, “lets go now.”

It was already dark when they started out on that hike looking for them. It was only fifteen minutes down the path when we all saw a little bit of light shining and three dark shapes, Dad, Mom, and cousin Dory.

Spooning Style

As soon as I saw the poster, I knew it was perfect for me. The play had ended and to my disappointment, I wasn’t in it, but I wasn’t going to miss my favorite activity back in elementary school: the talent show.

I’m in sixth grade, not elementary school anymore, I thought wistfully, The school year is coming to an end, and I want to continue all the memories of talent shows: singing, dancing, reciting a tongue twister, playing the spoons.  After a few minutes of thought, I decided to play the spoons again.  But THIS time, it’s going to be a popular song. Not like when I was playing to A Spoonful of Sugar back in 2nd grade.  This time, it will be crowd-raising.

I signed up on Thursday, but I didn’t realize I could that day until I heard the announcements in the afternoon.  I felt like I had forgotten something important.  It was only when I got to the mini-gym that I realized what it was.

“Oh my gosh!” I cried, “I forgot my spoons!!!!!”  Every time someone came down to the gym area, I would ask them, “Do you have any spare spoons?  Are you sure?  I need them!!!!!!”  No one had any.

Then it was my turn to go in. In the mini-gym, a teacher was sitting back in a chair and writing on a clipboard.

“What is your act?” he looked up and asked.

“Um…” I said nervously, “I’m playing the spoons to Gangnam Style.”

“Could you give me a preview?”

“No.  I forgot my spoons,” I grinned embarrassedly.

“Well, remember on the day of the talent show,” he laughed a bit, “and about the music, do you have a CD?”

“Well, I can play it on my iPhone.”

“Okay.  I think that’ll work.  See you on Friday.  Remember: practice, practice, practice!”

The next day, I went into the auditorium when they called for the performers.  I grabbed the two extra spoons from my lunchbox and headed to the auditorium.  Everything from then to my turn was a blur.  I faintly remember a group performance including Zoe, Paula, and Claire Williams, comedian magic from Sahle, and assorted songs and dances.  The next thing I knew, it was my turn.

I went up to the backstage and handed the technician woman my iPhone to play Gangnam Style.  Then I went onstage.  As soon as I stepped out from the curtain and saw the crowd, my heart leapt into my throat.

Calm down, Lillian, I encouraged myself, has fear ever stopped you before?  No!  You can do it.  You stumbled over the tongue twister in second grade.  You were the lead female role in fifth grade.  YOU SANG IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL (plus some parents) IN KINDERGARTEN!!!!!! Don’t let fear take you over now.

And then the music started, and slowly my fear turned into joy, my worried face morphed into a smile, and I started shouting for happiness as I played.  Gangnam Style made the crowd go wild, and my spoons clicked out the rhythm and the beat of one of the most popular songs in the USA.  I saw the crowd clapping and singing.  I heard the chink of my spoons above the thunderous roar of the crowd singing along.  The sweat of dancing and playing the spoons made sweat drip along my hands.  But I didn’t care.  I was in my element, and I wasn’t going to stop until the song was over. I couldn’t.  It just had to come out.

And as the final repetition of the chorus blasted out of the speakers, I yelled along with the crowd.

    “Opum Gangnam Style!!!!!!!!!!”

I passed the rest of the talent show with a smile on my face.  When the last dance and song was over, all the contestants were called up to the stage.

“Wow, Lillian,” Phoebe remarked, “I bet you’ve won.”

“Couldn’t have,” I insisted, “I’ve never won a contest in my life.  You did great though.  I loved BOTH of your entries.”

Just then, the hosts called for silence.  They talked to the crowd for a while, but then they said the magic words.

“And, the first place winner is…”

I hadn’t been called for third or second place.  I doubted I could’ve gotten first.

   “Lillian, with Spooning Style”

SAY WHAT?!?!?!? I screamed in my head.  I would’ve never thought I would win first place.  But, miracles happen.  I had won.

I got my prize the next week: an envelope with candy, a magnet, and four $5 coupons for the Dairy Godmother inside.  I gave the candy away (I didn’t like any of it), but I still have the magnet, coupons, and even the envelope on my fridge.  I doubt it will ever happen again, but maybe.

And maybe this time I will be even better.  But for now…

… Go Spooning Style!!!!!!!
