On Tuesday, May 5th when our new principal was introduced to the school staff, our very own Paula made it her business to meet the Dr. Jesse Dingle so that she could report it for the Theogony. As the editor for next school year she knew this was a great story that she did not want to miss. Great scoop Paula.Learn more about our new principal Dr. Dingle by clicking here.

May is Mental Health month, and we definitely want to celebrate healthy coping skills and mental health amongst each and every one of you! We continue to promote healthy ways of coping with stress and encourage any of you who are experience increasing stress levels or find yourself in a crisis to come see your counselor or social worker without delay. Academics are just one part of our jobs, your mental health and well being are so important to any future success you will have in life. Please see information about dealing with crises that was recently posted on Blackboard: Loss of any kind is very challenging, but especially when the reasons behind the loss are unknown or confusing. This can be especially unsettling for children and teens. Social support systems are invaluable to grieving students and PRS CrisisLink is here to speak with anyone who needs help. PRS CrisisLink’s hotline and textline are both free and confidential and are available 24/7/365. The crisis workers answering the hotline and textline understand that everyone grieves differently and that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to experience a loss. If you or someone you know is experiencing a crisis, please reach out. Hotline: 703-527-4077 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Textline: 703-940-0888. Website link

A total of $2,000 is available for the mini-grant program. Applicants may request up to $1,000. It is anticipated that the average award will be $500. Pictures from College Visits

Please remember to send your pictures to your counselor from your college visits. On Wednesday, May 5th the LC 11 counselors celebrated Cinco de Mayo by attending a breakfast hosted by representatives from Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Stanford, and University of Pennsylvania. This was a great session where we learned a lot about their admissions processes and key things to consider when applying to schools of this caliber. Please visit the school’s websites and your counselor if you would like more information.

In addition, we just learned about a tremendous resource for learning about Historically Black Colleges and Universities, which are educating a diverse population of students, and preparing them to enter the workforce as leaders in a variety of fields.

2015 VDOT Career Fair

11th Annual VDOT Transportation Career Fair EARLY BIRD” SCHOOL REGISTRATION
Registration formInformational flier
In the Fall 2015, students will have the opportunity to see displays and demonstrations, discover information on internships and scholarships, participate in hands-on exercises, and network with future employers at the 11th Annual VDOT Transportation Career Fair for High School Students in Northern Virginia. This event offers students a clear vision of career paths in transportation and could make a positive impact on their futures!

This career fair is designed to have valuable information for all students interested in technical, professional, or labor careers in the highway (planning, engineering, or construction,) airport, rail, and port industries. This notice serves as your “early bird” information about the event.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will host this event on Thursday, October 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Prince William County Fairgrounds in Manassas.  The event,  “Transportation:  Your Ride to the Future!”  will offer students a wide variety of information about careers in transportation-related fields such as engineering, aviation, transit, architecture, technology, construction, the environment, to name a few.  This career fair has grown over the years into the Commonwealth’s premier workforce-related high school event, more than 1,000 students attended last year.

This career fair is for students who are college bound as well as those wanting to enter the workforce immediately following high school.  Again, it will cover careers in construction, engineering, technology, environment, multi-modal transportation and more!  There will be something for every student at this career fair!

We will have more than 90 exhibitors representing private industry, member organizations, colleges, universities and governmental agencies who will offer hands-on activities, demonstrations and displays. Bag Lunches for students and their chaperones, and quality giveaways will be provided to the students by a number of corporate sponsors.
Last year’s exhibitors offered scholarships, internships, and career information.  Students were able to have hands-on opportunities with heavy equipment and ask questions about all types of career options.  Additionally, students had opportunities to win valuable prizes and obtain interesting giveaways.  For instance, three students were selected to receive a $250 prize as a result of a drawing, and their schools were each awarded a $1,250 cash prize simply because their student’s names were drawn!  The more students you bring, the better your odds are to win prizes.

“Early Bird” registration was very successful last year, with more than 565 students pre-registered for the event before the summer break.

Looking forward to seeing you in October!
