5th Annual Council on Women STEM Essay Contest

Governor McAuliffe and Virginia Council on Women Announce the 5th Annual STEM Essay Contest – The Council will award five $5,000 scholarships to female junior or senior high school students who will be pursuing a STEM career at an institution of higher education. One scholarship will be awarded in each of five geographic regions across the state. Additional scholarships may be awarded at the discretion of the Council. To be eligible, one must be a female who resides in Virginia, be enrolled as a junior or senior in high school and hold at least a 2.5 GPA.  Applications and guidelines are available online at: http://www.commonwealth.virginia.gov/council-on-women/ . Entries must be submitted by February 8, 2016.  Essays will be judged by a panel of Council members and women who hold a degree in or work in STEM fields. Winners will be notified by March 28, 2016.  The scholarship awards will be presented at a reception at the Executive Mansion on April 20, 2016. Listed below are scholarships awarded by the Virginia DAR. Two scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who plan to major in any field other than nursing. The winners MUST attend a Virginia college or university. No affiliation with the State or National Societies is necessary to qualify for these scholarships. DAR members’ children are also eligible to apply. Click on the link for application information.

American History Scholarship – DUE January 16th!

The American History scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who will pursue an undergraduate degree with a concentrated study of a minimum of 24 credit hours in American History and/or American Government. The winners MUST attend a Virginia college or university. (link)

Virginia Nursing Scholarship – DUE January 15th!

This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who will continue her/his education at an accredited Virginia school of nursing.

A  Cover Sheet  and  Financial Need  form are also required. See the application (link)  which outlines the scholarship program. All are available from the links here, from local DAR chapters, or the State DAR Scholarship Chairman. Some high school counselors may also have the forms. All scholarship applications must be received by the State DAR Scholarship Chairman not later than January 15. For more information, contact State Chairman  Judith Jones.

Lee-Jackson Scholarship

Scholarships are given by the Lee-Jackson Foundation of Charlottesville, Virginia, for outstanding essays which demonstrate an appreciation of the exemplary character and soldierly virtues of Generals Lee and Jackson. One $10,000, eight $2,000, and eighteen $1,000 college scholarships are available to Virginia high school juniors and seniors.

The Granville P. Meade Scholarship

The Granville P. Meade Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college. The Granville P. Meade fund provides scholarship awards to worthy and needy Virginia high school seniors to attend one of Virginia’s public or private colleges or universities.
