New $cholar$hip List Released

Another important way to secure funding for college is through scholarships. Have you taken a look at the latest scholarship newsletter produced by Mrs. Feldman? Click here for the January/February list of scholarships available that may additional funding sources your way! We also wanted to reinforce this list (link) of Virginia based scholarships that were released by the Virginia Department of Education, and some have fast approaching deadlines!

2nd Annual America Saves Essay Contest

Last year Virginia Cooperative Extension – Arlington County (VCE) and CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union successfully co-sponsored a high school essay contest with America Saves.

The 2016 Essay Theme is Saving Involves Self-Motivation and Delayed Gratification (flyer link)

Students are required to answer the following questions.

  1. What is something you saved for and why?
  2. How did you motivate yourself to save for a future purchase?
  3. What other purchases/opportunities did you forgo to achieve your goal?

The contest is open to students age 14 and older, who are in grades 9 – 12 in Alexandria or Arlington High Schools.  Essays must be 250 to 500 words, typed and double spaced.

Completed essays must be submitted as an email attachment to Mkco214@vt.edu by 5pm EST, Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Contestants must also complete and submit the America Saves Pledge, which can be found at: www.NorthernVirginiaSaves.org

Submitted essays will be judged by three VCE Master Financial Education Volunteers. Judges will grade the essays on relevancy to the theme; consistency & continuity of style; expression of thoughts; clarity; readability, spelling, grammar & punctuation and overall presentation.

The prizes will be awarded at a ceremony during America Saves Week on Thursday, February 25th, 2016 at the Fairlington Community Center.

Resources for Future Planning

Are you still trying to figure out what you want to do next? Have you completed the career and interest inventories in Naviance? As many of you are still unsure of what you want to do “when you grow up” please know you are NOT alone! This is a major decision that requires the a lot of reflection and resources, and allowing yourself some time to explore your options. We encourage each of you to take advantage of the wonderful career planning tools available in Naviance, including some career and interest inventories that can provide excellent information to assist in your decision making process for your post secondary planning. Also, please note, some college representatives are starting to come back to TC, and this is a great time to follow up with admissions representatives if you have applied, or explore possible options if you’re still seeking. Keep an eye on Naviance to see which schools are scheduling visits, and utilize the numerous resource in the College and Career Center to help with narrowing your search.
