AVID students in the 9th grade at T.C. Williams High School, Minnie Howard Campus, began by talking about problems in their school and neighborhoods. Important issues around mental health, facilities and gentrification were raised and openly discussed. From there students identified specific ways they wanted to address these issues. Small groups formed to work on bathroom beautification, mental health support groups for younger students and family nights to bring teens and their parents together. Many plans were well under way when school was closed for the year. Students hope to continue their plans next year and support the new AVID class as they pursue similar projects.
