English Language Learners at Francis C. Hammond Middle School are developing their English literacy skills. When asked how they could continue to do this and help others, the students thought of visiting their elementary school and working with 1st graders, and that is what they began doing. Biweekly the Hammond students walk down the hill behind their school and are greeted as celebrities at James K. Polk Elementary School. The middle school students read with their 1st grade partners, play literacy games and assist with writing tasks. Students enjoy the chance to work with the younger and find it is building their own English skills too.
